Sports Axiology
By Rashad Devoe
Wednesday, Mar 03, 2010 09:20
The other day I spent 3 hours with my friend Jeremy Boone he is one of the best strength coaches and speakers in the country. He works with numerous pro football and baseball players along with many pro soccer teams.

He has been working for the last few years a program called Sports Axiology which is in essence "The Science of value, and decision making in sports"

He uses his program in 3 phases to help coaches coach better, to help athletes reach highest potential and get over potential road blocks, and help parents to understand their athlete child and how to help not hinder their growth.

Jeremy had me complete a coaching profile which is the task of ranking statements that took about 10 minutes to complete, by the outcome of how I ranked these statements he could tell exactly my coaching style and to some extent how I even plan my training/practices and why.

He also had 2 of my players complete the Player profile, this is where the player completes a task of ranking 18 statements.

Jeremy has never met these 2 athletes but he could tell me about them as if he has trained them for 4 years like I have. He could even tell that one of my players had issues with injuries just by how the player ranked the statements.

The cool thing was that the coaching profile showed that I have a very systemic/ systems oriented coaching style and the players are very Intrinsic, so when I ask them a questions during a stress related time like during a game after they made a mistake like "What were you thinking when you did that" or "Why would you do that" I get the blank stare look because they are not systemic they can't go through that step by step process.

If I ask them "How would you do that play the next time it happens?" Then it empowers them to give me an answer that they feel is not a loaded, meaning any answer they give I will jump down their throat. It also helps them realize they do have the I.Q to do it themselves

I know most of you I have lost and you are old school and say "I am the coach and I tell you what to do and you do it, I am not asking or empowering any kids"

But you have to wake up, it is not like when we were kids coming up playing sports. I am 35 years old when the coach yelled at you we didn't go home and tell our parents and the parents yelled at the coach. My parents yelled at me for making the coach mad.

There is no more vanilla box when coaching you can't coach the same way for every athlete. It does not work.

Another cool thing about the player profile is it shows how much knowledge or coaching they are retaining. I can see if my players feel they have enough knowledge of the game to feel comfortable playing in certain situations. If not I know I have to spend extra time or change my approach in how I get the concepts across with these athletes to get them to that level I need them to be.

This is just one way sport axiology works and as the weeks go by I will be saying a lot more about it. As a matter of fact I am going to start adding it to all my programs. Everyone will take a player profile that is in my programs. It will allow me to be a more effective coach and help the athletes understand the concepts better.

One of my pet peeves is the word communicate when it comes to coaching, I hate hearing a coach has to be a communicator or needs to be a more effective communicator.

Why?

If I am speaking french to you and you are speaking English to me, we are still communicating but we don't understand each other. You may be communicating to your athletes but they don't understand you.

Again I may have lost you, but for those that are interested you will see how great this tool is in the coming weeks.

For me the 3 hours was just the tip of the iceberg and I still didn't even get close to all the info but if you stick with me I will show you something wonderful

You will have what my favorite graduate school teacher Dr. Milne would call an AH! HA! moment.

This is not lacrosse but it still shows that speed training is worked on. Check out how much time & effort Carl Crawford puts into the technique of base running & speed training...

Snow Workout
By Rashad Devoe
Thursday, Feb 11, 2010 02:11
In Texas we have 2 inches of snow and everything is closed lol, I know the whole East Coast is laughing at us ... But since I am inside I decided to put up a workout you can do in your house

Here we go repeat the circuit 4 times with a 1 minute rest once you finish the whole circuit. You will do each exercise 30 seconds with a 15 Seconds rest as you switch to the next exercise.

  1. Bodyweight Squat
  2. Pushups
  3. Mountain Climbers
  4. Planks
  5. Up/Downs or Burbpees
  6. Hamstring Dives
  7. Triangle Pushups - (Put your hands in a triangle position on floor)
  8. Jump Squat
  9. Crunches
  10. Skater Hops
  11. Dips on end of couch

I bet you this work will get your heart rate going and it also will work as CONDITIONING without running.

Now I'm going out to play in the snow with Pierce, Delilah, & Dash

You can't create athletes?
By Rashad Devoe
Monday, Jan 11, 2010 12:27
I hear coaches all the time say you can't make athletes - well here are some of the top athletes in the world and they are WORKING at becoming more athletic. Listen to the conditioning coaches as they explain.

Lacrosse needs to stop hoping football and basketball players come play lacrosse and start creating athletes that football and basketball players want.

Video Shows All- Maverik Soldiers Exposed
By Rashad Devoe

This video shows a key secret to the spit dodge that not many people realize.

Watch Paul Rabil's Footwork in this video when he dodges, he always does a stutter step with his feet shoulder width apart, he never has one foot in front when he makes the initial move.

This kills your planting and cutting power.

The stutter step allows you to determine what direction right or left you want to dodge.
